ON THIS DAY in 1912, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Richeson Admits Poisoning Girl.”  The article focused on a minister’s confession of poisoning a girl.

“‘Gentlemen — Deeply penitent for my sin, and earnestly desiring, as far as in my power lies, to make atonement, I hereby confess that I am guilty of the offense of which I stand indicted,’” the Eagle reported Minister Richeson as saying.

JOAN OF ARC was born on this day in 1412.  Teenage Jeanne d’Arc heard the voice of God commanding her to take up the arms against the English during the Hundred Years War.  She led a French army dressed as a man to try to oust the English from France.  She was eventually captured and turned over to a French ecclesiastical court that found her guilty of heresy.  She was burned at the stake in 1431.

CARL SANDBURG was born on this day in 1878.  Sandburg was a poet, biographer of Lincoln, historian and folklorist.  He was the recipient of two Pulitzer Prizes.  He died in 1967.

A TALK titled “Art of Literary Translation: How Meaning Translates Across Languages” will be featured at WORD Bookstore’s Greenpoint location tonight at 7 p.m.  Translator Alex Zucker and Fluent City teacher Julia Livi will discuss how the intended reader of a blog, book or article shapes the words that land on a page.
