Grace Chorale to perform ‘Luminous Night’ in Bay Ridge

Works by Beethoven as well as music from contemporary composers will be on the program when Grace Chorale of Brooklyn makes its first appearance at Art on the Corner, an arts program in Bay Ridge.

Grace Chorale’s performance, which will take place on Sunday, Jan. 11, at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 7420 Fourth Ave. (corner of Fourth Avenue and Bay Ridge Parkway), at 3 p.m., is called “Luminous Night.”

The concert will feature “Elegischer Gesang” by Beethoven, followed by works by living composers, including Ola Gjielo’s “Luminous Night of the Soul,” Veronika Krausas’s “Language of the Birds” and Eric Whitacre’s “Five Hebrew Love Songs.” The concert will also include a commissioned piece by Brooklyn composer Vince Peterson based on excerpts from “Chamber Music,” a text by James Joyce.

Grace Chorale of Brooklyn is a community chorus based in Brooklyn Heights. It is a 75-member group with smaller ensembles that are drawn from their ranks. The musical director is Jason Asbury.

Art on the Corner is the arts ministry of Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, where local and international artists have performed and shared their art with the communities of southwest Brooklyn for nine years

Admission to Art on the Corner events is by a suggested donation of $10.00 per person.

Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd will also be filled with music on Saturday, Jan. 24 when The Park Slope Singers present “Women & Children First,” a concert with light-hearted songs for children. The 3 p.m. concert will also feature a mixture of madrigals and contemporary music about women. Some of the selections include “Animal Crackers,” “Nelly Bly” and “Eleanor Rigby.”

Under the direction of Ira Spaulding, The Park Slope Singers is a group of 60 community members who like to sing together and meet weekly to make music.  The singers rehearse in the lower level of Saint Saviour Church in Park Slope and perform in concert twice a year.

Tickets to the Jan. 24 concert are $15.00 per person at the door, $10.00 per person for senior citizens and students.
