ON THIS DAY in 1909, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “City Scores a Victory in Water Supply Fight.”

The article focused on the state board refusing to sidetrack hearings by referring a water supply fight to the courts.  Those opposing it were allegedly attempting to delay hearings.

“The city scored a substantial victory over the opponents of the plan to enter Suffolk County for additional water at the hearing which the State Water Board held on the matter to-day at the offices of the Board of Water Supply…” the Eagle reported. “The plan … will eventually increase the water supply of Brooklyn by at least 250,000,000 gallons…”

CARTOONIST Charles Addams was born on this day in 1912.  Addams became a full-time staff member of The New Yorker in 1935 and stayed there for his entire career, producing about 1,300 cartoons.  He is most famous for “The Addams Family.” He died in 1988.
