NYC Council calls for renewal of Sept. 11 health bill

 The New York City Council is introducing a resolution calling on Congress to reauthorize federal legislation to compensate first responders who grew ill working at ground zero.

The James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation act has paid out more than $1.1 billion to those impacted by the attacks.

There are two components to the bill. One expires this October, the other in October 2016.

The resolution introduced Wednesday does not carry any legislative power.

But councilmembers were joined by several advocates who are urging the newly Republican controlled Congress to reauthorize the act.

New York Police Department Detective James Zadroga died after spending time working at the site of the World Trade Center collapse.
