Women seeking mammograms can get the all-important the breast cancer screening for free, thanks to Councilmember Vincent Gentile and the American-Italian Cancer Foundation, who are teaming up to provide a mobile clinic outside the lawmaker’s Bay Ridge district office on Jan. 9.

The mobile clinic will be parked outside Gentile’s office at 8018 Fifth Ave. from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday to offer free digital mammograms and clinical breast exams to all women ages 40 and older. No co-pays are required and all deductibles will be waived, according to Gentile’s office.

Early detection of breast cancer can saves lives and Gentile (D-Bay Ridge-Dyker Heights-Bensonhurst) said he wants all women aged 40 and over to start the New Year off as healthy as possible.

“The goal of screening exams for breast cancer is to find cancers before they start to cause symptoms – before a patient can feel a lump and during an easily treatable stage,” Justin Brannan, Gentile’s communications director, wrote in an email to the Brooklyn Eagle. “Many doctors will tell you that early detection tests for breast cancer save thousands of lives each year, and that many more could be saved if more women took advantage of these tests. That is why these screenings are so important.”
