The Emergency Department at Lutheran Medical Center will be expanding its services for children, including having some of its doctors and nurses dedicated to pediatric care 24/7 under an agreement with NYU Langone Medical Center, officials announced this week.

Calling it a “dramatic expansion” of its child health services, officials at Lutheran HealthCare, the entity which runs Lutheran Medical Center at 150 55th St., said a new clinical collaboration with NYU Langone will help it meet its commitment to the growing health care needs of Brooklyn’s children.

In addition to having a specialized unit within the Emergency Department just to handle pediatric cases, the new agreement with NYU Langone NYU means that Lutheran HealthCare can also broaden its reach to address pediatric obesity, diabetes and asthma, as well as pediatric rehabilitation, officials said. The specialty services will also include pediatric cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, nephrology and pulmonology.

The expanded coverage in the Emergency Department will begin in February.

Under the agreement, specialists from NYU Langone will join Lutheran HealthCare’s community-based primary pediatric care programs. Patients will have access to subspecialty care at NYU Langone Medical Center in Manhattan, if necessary.

In November, NYU Langone and Lutheran Medical Center announced an affiliation to extend NYU Langone’s presence in Brooklyn, while bolstering Lutheran’s access to NYU Langone’s array of medical and surgical specialties. The affiliation is pending regulatory approvals.

The new collaboration announced this week is between Lutheran HealthCare and NYU Langone.

“We are thrilled to collaborate with NYU Langone and even more excited about what these expansions mean for Lutheran, our patients, and our community,” said Wendy Z. Goldstein, president and CEO of Lutheran HealthCare. “This is a major commitment to ensuring that the highest level of complex pediatric care is provided in our community, where the need is the greatest, by world-class providers.”

The increased services will build upon Lutheran HealthCare’s existing pediatric programs, including its large school-based health center program and its Pediatric Epilepsy Center of Excellence, officials said.

“Both NYU Langone and Lutheran are committed to providing our patients with enhanced access to comprehensive medical care in the neighborhoods where they live and work,” said Dr. Robert Grossman, dean and CEO of NYU Langone Medical Center.

Grossman called the collaboration “an important step in realizing this collective mission.”

Lutheran HealthCare is an academic, community health care system that includes Lutheran Medical Center, Lutheran Family Health Centers, Lutheran Augustana Center for Extended Care and Rehabilitation and senior housing at Shore Hill in Bay Ridge. Lutheran Medical Center, founded in 1883, is a 450-bed teaching hospital that serves as the hub of Lutheran HealthCare.

NYU Langone Medical Center is located in Manhattan and is composed of four hospitals – Tisch Hospital; Rusk Rehabilitation; the Hospital for Joint Diseases; and Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital. It also owns the NYU School of Medicine.

NYU Langone’s deepening presence in Brooklyn’s health care universe is also evidenced by its takeover of the emergency department at the former Long Island College Hospital (LICH) in October. As the Brooklyn Eagle’s Mary Frost reported on Oct. 31,  the facility now operates under the name NYU Langone-Cobble Hill.
