Marty Markowitz, Vice President, Borough Promotion & Engagement at NYC & Company, was named to the Brooklyn Board of Directors at the American Heart Association this month.

Markowitz comes to the Brooklyn Board of Directors after serving as Brooklyn Borough President for 12 years. In March 2014, Markowitz joined NYC & Company as VP, Borough Promotion & Engagement.

“Heart health issues are very important to me because of my life experience with heart disease impacting my grandfather, my father and me,” said Markowitz.  “I look forward to working with the American Heart Association on this important issue.”

As Brooklyn Borough President, Markowitz’s achievements included: creating the Brooklyn Tourism Office, coordinating the development of the Brooklyn Cruise Ship Terminal, envisioning the move of the New Jersey Nets to Brooklyn, organizing the construction of the state-of-the-art Barclays Center, creating the annual Brooklyn Book Festival, and revitalizing and rezoning areas such as Coney Island, Greenpoint-Williamsburg and Downtown Brooklyn. Prior to his role as Borough President, Markowitz served in the New York State Senate for 23 years.

As VP of Borough Promotion & Engagement at NYC & Company, the City’s nonprofit tourism and marketing organization, Markowitz applies his long history of promoting Brooklyn’s culture, neighborhoods and businesses to the Bronx, Queens and Staten Island so that all five boroughs benefit from the tourism industry.
