CYPRUS — Island Celebrates Independence: Members of the Special Forces march during the annual Independence Day military parade in Nicosia on Thursday. The divided island is celebrating 55 years of independence amid peace talks to decide whether rival Greek and Turkish communities will herald the birth of a future unified state. The island has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded in response to a coup aimed at uniting the island with Greece. The country gained independence from Britain in 1960.
