Malliotakis, Maimonides team up to teach CPR

Brooklyn residents can learn how to save lives — by going to church.

Assemblymember Nicole Malliotakis (R-C-Bay Ridge-Staten Island) is teaming up with medical experts from Maimonides Medical Center to co-host “Friends and Family CPR,” a free program that will teach the basics of cardio-pulmonary resuscitation.

The free class will take place on Thursday, Nov. 5, at Salam Arabic Lutheran Church, 414 80th St. in Bay Ridge, at 6:30 p.m.

“We’ve hosted free CPR training classes in the past and they’re always so very well attended. You never know when your training will be needed, and it’s a tremendous skill to have,” Malliotakis said.

“CPR saves lives. It’s that simple,” said Dr. John Marshall, chairman of Emergency Medicine at Maimonides Medical Center. “We’re delighted to partner with Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis in providing this essential training.”

The class does not provide official CPR certification, but will teach basic CPR, according to Malliotakis.

Knowing CPR can save a life, according to the American Heart Association’s website www.cprheart.org, which includes a fact sheet with some startling statistics.

Nearly 326,000 incidents of cardiac arrest take place in the U.S. each year, according to the association’s fact sheet. Four out of five incidents of cardiac arrest occur in the victim’s home.

Only 8 percent of victims who suffer incidents of cardiac arrest survive long enough to get to the hospital, the association said.
