Greetings, Brooklyn. Today is the 288th day of the year.

ON THIS DAY IN 1904, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Big Court Room Flooded.”

The article focused on severe damage done to a Queens County court house due to a running faucet.

“The flood occurred yesterday afternoon while a case was in progress before Justice Kelly,” the Eagle reported. “Someone opened a tap in the kitchen on the floor above and let it run. The water soon made its way to the court room, tickling down behind the jurors, who were forced to change their seats.”

It was the first sitcom to be filmed live before a studio audience, and it did extremely well in the ratings both the first time around and in reruns. The last telecast ran Sept. 24, 1961.
