Xaverian High School held the first Open House of its new co-ed era, drawing more than 800 prospective students on a recent Sunday, giving the teens a chance to learn more about the school, which will be admitting girls starting in September of 2016.

The attendance marked a record for a Xaverian Open House, according to school officials. Xaverian officials announced earlier this year that the all-boys high school will be going co-ed. Xaverian welcomed the prospective students in style at the Oct. 18 Open House, having the Pipe and Drum Corps greet them with music on the front steps of the building at 7100 Shore Road in Bay Ridge.

After the roaring welcome from the Pipe and Drum Corps, the prospective students and their families stopped at a registration table for materials and then went in to the cafeteria were they had the opportunity to chat with representatives from every academic department of the school. They also got the chance to talk to members of the school’s alumni and with parents of current students to learn more about the Xaverian experience. Xaverian also presented the new Lands’ End uniforms that the incoming freshman class will wear.

In the auditorium, the visitors saw an original skit performed by students and heard about the advantages of a Xaverian education from Marco Giarracca, who graduated in 2011. The speakers also included Xaverian President Robert Alesi, a 1978 graduate; Assistant Principal Dan Sharib, who graduated in 1996; and Assistant Principal Maria Pacheco. Alesi offered the students and their families an overview of Xaverian’s Strategic Plan for the Future and summarized upcoming capital projects in the building. The newcomers also visited the Michael T. Strianese STEM Program and took a tour of Xaverian’s Technology Center.

Another musical performance awaited them in the technology center, thanks to Xaverian’s Harp Ensemble, which played for the visitors. Eddie Mayrose, a 1979 Xaverian graduate, who serves as the assistant director of Advancement and Athletics, offered information on the girls’ athletics program. Deacon Kevin McCormack, the school’s principal, also gave a presentation. Following the presentations, the prospective students and their families headed to the gym to chat with representatives from all of the different clubs and athletic teams for boys and girls at the school. While next September will mark the arrival of female students in the high school grades, there are girls currently being educated inside Xaverian’s building. Xaverian High School contains a middle school called Genesis, which is already co-ed.
