Malliotakis said she is strongly supporting the freshman senator from Florida.

“Washington will never change if we keep electing the same 20th century leaders with the same 20th century ideas when it comes to addressing the important issues facing our nation, such as our economy, college debt, national security and immigration. Marco is a generational leader with the vision and plan to meet the unique challenges we are facing and preserve the American Dream. I’m proud to support Marco Rubio for president and look forward to helping him win New York,” Malliotakis said in a statement.

The Republican Primary in New York state will take place on April 19, 2016.

Malliotakis and Rubio have something in common, in addition to their Republican ideology.

Both are the children of Cuban immigrants. Malliotakis’s mother, Vera, fled Cuba when Fidel Castro came to power. Rubio’s parents, Mario and Oriales, came to the U.S. from Cuba in 1956.
