St. Patrick Academy students walk to raise money for school

It was a beautiful day for a stroll along the shore, but students and teachers from St. Patrick Catholic Academy were walking with a purpose on a recent Thursday when they headed to the Shore Road Promenade in Bay Ridge for the academy’s annual walk-a-thon.

The walk-a-thon serves as a fundraiser for the academy, which is located at 401 97th St. in Bay Ridge.

This year’s walk-a-thon was extra special, according to Principal Andrea D’Emic, because it was held in memory of Annemarie Kulaka, president of the Home Academy Association, who died earlier this year. The association is a parents’ group similar to a public school Parent-Teacher Association.

“Mrs. Kulaka always worked hard to provide our students with wonderful and fun activities throughout the year. She inspired all of us to work hard and always remember to enjoy each other and have fun,” D’Emic said.

The students walked along the Shore Road Promenade and enjoyed a lovely view of the New York Harbor. “Our annual walk-a-thon is a great opportunity for us to enjoy the beauty of the Narrows as a school community,” D’Emic said.

Under the careful guidance of their teachers and cops from the 68th Precinct, students walked from the academy along Fourth Avenue to the promenade, where they posed for photos in front of the majestic Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and waved to officers aboard two NYPD Harbor Unit boats that were on patrol.

The students walked along the promenade for more than a mile before heading back to school.
