Brooklyn Today
Greetings, Brooklyn. Today is the 327th day of the year.
ON THIS DAY IN 1932, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Peggy Joyce’s Glory Sold by Uncle Sam.”
The article focused a wealthy woman failing to declare items to customs upon her arrival to the U.S., thereby forfeiting them for auction.
“Peggy Hopkins Joyce’s jeweled plaque, seized by custom men 10 years ago on the ground that she had failed to declare it when arriving in this country, was sold today at public auction at the Army Base for $1,000, less than one-twelfth of its estimated value of $12,400,” the Eagle reported.
