Justice Ingram indicated that he would sentence the defendant to a determinate term of 18 years in prison and five years’ post-release supervision when he is sentenced on Dec. 9.

Thompson said that according to the investigation, on May 20, 2014, at approximately 2 a.m. at 101 Marine Ave., the defendant’s 14-year-old son observed his father repeatedly stabbing the victim in the chest and neck with a knife. The teen intervened, pulling the defendant off of the victim.

The defendant then stabbed himself in the stomach, Thompson said. His son sustained a slash to his arm and was treated at a hospital and released.
 
The stabbing took place after Gyltene Rugova indicated she wanted a divorce from her husband.

Gyltene Rugova died as a result of multiple stab wounds to her chest and neck, according to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

“This defendant senselessly killed his wife — the mother of his four children — who are now left with no parents to care for them as he will be spending many years in prison,” Thompson said in a statement.
   
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Cynthia A. Lynch and Joan Erskine of the District Attorney’s Domestic Violence Bureau, under the supervision of Bureau Chief Michelle L. Kaminsky.
