INDIA — Flooding Continues to Devastate: People use a water tank for floatation as they wade through flood waters in Chennai on Thursday. The heaviest rainfall in more than 100 years has devastated swathes of the southern state of Tamil Nadu, with thousands forced to leave their submerged homes and schools, while offices and a regional airport shut for a second day Thursday.

NICARAGUA — Volcano Shows Signs of Activity: The Momotombo volcano spews a plume of gas and ash as well as glowing rock, as seen from the rural community of Papalonal on Wednesday. Quiet for many years, the volcano emitted some glowing rock on Wednesday, after gas and ash emissions began Tuesday. In 1610, the city of Leon was destroyed during an eruption of the Momotombo and was relocated west, where it is currently located.
