A 54-year-old Bay Ridge man who admitted stabbing his wife to death in 2014 has been sentenced to serve 18 years in prison, Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson announced on Dec. 9.

Hasan Rugova had pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter in the death of his wife Gyltene Rugova, 46. The defendant was sentenced to a determinate term of 18 years in prison and five years of post-release supervision by New York State Supreme Court Justice John Ingram.

The fatal stabbing took place inside the couple’s apartment at 101 Marine Ave. on May 20, 2014, following an argument inside of their apartment.

The couple argued after Gyltene revealed that she wanted a divorce, Thompson said.

“Today’s sentence guarantees that this defendant is held accountable for the senseless slaying of his wife, the mother of his four children, who, by this guilty plea and sentence, were spared the trauma of a trial and ensured a measure of justice for their mother,”  the district attorney said in a statement.

Thompson said the investigation determined that at approximately 2 a.m. on May 20, 2014, the couple’s 14-year-old son saw the defendant repeatedly stabbing his mother in the chest and neck with a knife. The boy intervened, pulling his father off of his mother. The defendant then stabbed himself in the stomach. The teen sustained a slash to his arm. He was treated at the hospital with stitches, after which he was released.

Gyltene died as a result of multiple stab wounds to her chest and neck, according to the  medical examiner.
