Three Brooklyn mystery writers have been nominated for the 2015 Edgar Allen Poe awards (popularly called the Edgar Awards), to be presented on April 29 at the Mystery Writers of America’s gala banquet at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Manhattan.

Adam Sternbergh, the author of “Shovel Ready” and a sequel, “Near Enemy,” has been nominated for Best First Novel. “Shovel Ready” is a crime thriller about a garbage man-turned-hit man that’s set in a bombed-out future version of New York City. “Shovel Ready” has been described as both crime fiction and sci-fi. Sternbergh is a contributing editor at New York Magazine and Vulture.

Julia Dahl, author of “Invisible City,” has also been nominated for Best First Novel. “Invisible City” is the story of Rebekah Roberts, a young tabloid reporter in New York City who was abandoned by her Hasidic mother soon after birth. When she is assigned to cover the murder of a Hasidic woman in Brooklyn, she uses her connection to the community to uncover the truth that police would rather ignore. Dahl is a journalist specializing in crime and criminal justice who currently writes for CBSNews.com.

Kate Milford, author of “Greenglass House,” has been nominated for Best Juvenile Book. In the book, a creaky smuggler’s inn that is usually quiet during wintertime is suddenly bursting with odd, secretive guests, each one bearing a strange story that is somehow connected to the old house. As objects go missing and tempers flare, the innkeepers’ adopted son and the cook’s daughter must untangle the web of mystery. Milford is also the author of “The Boneshaker,” “The Broken Lands” and other books as well as plays, screenplays and scholarly articles.
