Artist Basquiat’s notebooks to be published
Will Coincide With Brooklyn Museum Exhibit
Jean-Michel Basquiat (1968-1988) was one of the most important New York artists of the 1980s. Beginning as a member of SAMO, a group of Lower East Side-based graffiti artists, he soon became renowned for his neo-expressionist style.
Between 1980 and 1987, Basquiat filled numerous notebooks with his texts, poems and personal observations on a variety of subjects. To coincide with a major exhibit of his works at the Brooklyn Museum from April 3 to Aug. 23, a facsimile edition of several of Basquiat’s notebooks, titled “The Notebooks,” will be published in June.
“The Notebooks,” which will cost $29.95 hardcover, is edited by Larry Warsh, an early collector of works by Basquiat and fellow 1980s New York artist Keith Haring. Warsh was also a member of the Basquiat Authentication Committee until its dissolution in 2012.
