A strong defensive second half helped lead the Bishop Loughlin girls basketball team to a 58-39 victory over St. Francis Prep in Clinton Hill on Saturday.

“It was a nice win; we struggled in the beginning, but we found a way to come out of it and finish the game out strong,” Kiana Clark said. “Coach gets on us because we usually come out lazy in the beginning and then [in the] second half we know what we need to do, but it shouldn’t be like that.”

Sophomore Gabriela Moore scored four points in the first quarter to help Loughlin take an 8-4 lead. The game was neck and neck through the first half with Loughlin holding a slim 22-21 lead going into halftime.

Senior Oshunremi Iwelu led Loughlin with seven points in the third quarter as the Lions started to put distance between themselves and St. Francis Prep. Clark kicked off a 10-0 run late in the third with a jump shot that made it 38-31, and it was 46-31 when Milica Reid caped off the drive early in the fourth.

“At halftime, coach just said we need to get it together, and we all need to stop thinking too much,” Skydajah Patterson said. “I think we underestimated them a bit in the beginning too.”

The win was the sixth in a row for Loughlin, and it improved to 16-2 overall and 6-0 against Catholic High School Athletic Association opponents. That puts the team in first place ahead of Christ the King in the Brooklyn-Queens Division.

“This season is going well,” Patterson said. “I think that we did a bit better in the second than the first half, but we just need to pick it up … Right now we’re just focused on getting better offensively and defensively, so we’re working hard.”

Loughlin’s team has a good balance of older and younger players. Sophomore Milicia Reid leads the offense with 15 points and 5.1 assists per game, according to MaxPreps.com. Senior Kiana Clark is another major contributor with 9 points per game, junior Skydajah Patterson has 8.7 points per game and freshman Zaria Dorsey averages 8 points.

Despite the strong record, head coach Chez Williams is not satisfied with what he has seen and wants the team to continue to improve before a potential championship run.

“He feels that we as a team we haven’t played our best game yet,” Clark said. “He knows how much potential we have, how good we are and how good we can be, so he pushes us a lot to get to where we need to be. We’re going good, but we haven’t had our best game.

“Once we come out strong and play all four quarters the way that we’re supposed to I really think we can really put teams away.”
