ON THIS DAY in 1912, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Clew in the Eagle Leads to Arrest of Chauffeur for Hawthorne Killing.”

The article focused on this publication playing a leading role in solving a mystery.

“With the assistance of information which came to the Brooklyn Eagle from a witness, the police this afternoon arrested the chauffeur of the automobile which ran down and fatally injured Mrs. Margaret Hawthorne in front of 60 Flatbush Ave.,” the Eagle reported.
