ON THIS DAY in 1914, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Boy Admits Killing Teacher.”

The article focused on a student’s confession of murdering his teacher in the woods.

“Jean Gianini, under arrest for the murder of Miss Lydia Beecher, the young schoolteacher who was found stabbed to death in the woods…, has confessed his guilt, according to District Attorney Farrell,” the Eagle reported.

VINCENT VAN GOGH was born on this day in 1853. He was a Dutch post-Impressionist painter who was especially known for his bold and powerful use of color. He died in 1890.

PRESIDENT RONALD Reagan was shot in the chest on this day in 1981 in Washington, D.C.  Reagan suffered a punctured lung and heavy internal bleeding, but survived the attack. John W. Hinckley Jr., the accused attacker, was arrested on the scene. Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity and was committed to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital.

“UNABROW: Misadventures of a Late Bloomer,” by Brooklynite Una LaMarche, will be featured at BookCourt tonight at 7 p.m. The book shares the author’s “cringe-inducing” lessons learned from a life as a late bloomer. The event includes a reading, audience Q&A and book signing.
