The Brooklyn Rugby men faced off against Rockaway Rugby Club on Saturday in a conference matchup at Fort Tilden. Brooklyn came away with the victory, 19-5, against their cross-town rivals on a windy day in Rockaway Beach, Queens.

Both Brooklyn and Rockaway were coming off loses two weeks prior in the Empire GU playoffs, so each team was eagerly anticipating this game and hungry for a bounce-back victory against a familiar opponent. Brooklyn Captain Mike Reilly opened the scoring by touching down off of a scrum inside the Rockaway 5-meter line. The conversion attempt was unsuccessful from Kamil Ryczko and Brooklyn let 5-0. Shortly thereafter, Reilly scored again off of a 5-meter scrum outside the Rockaway try zone, by pouncing on a loose ball and putting Brooklyn up 12-0 after Ryczko’s second conversion was successful. The teams went into the half with Brooklyn maintaining a 12-0 lead.

Late in the second half, Rockaway was able to push the ball over for its first try, but missed on the conversion, bringing the score to 12-5. Minutes later, Jake Wyse scooped up a loose ball at midfield and broke away for Brooklyn’s third try of the day. Simon Fong was successful on the conversion, putting Brooklyn up 19-5, where it would remain until the final whistle.

Rockaway: 5 – Brooklyn: 19

Tries: Mike Reilly (2), Jake Wyse
