As a local mom who regularly enjoys Brooklyn Bridge Park with my family, I was dismayed to read of the shots fired at Pier 2 last week. Thankfully, no one was physically hurt, but I’m sure many of the families fleeing the park that day were terrified and traumatized.

I am tired of reading about the endless stream of gun violence in this country, because there is so much more we can do to prevent gun violence — like pass comprehensive background checks on all guns sales, a policy supported by more than 90 percent of Americans.

The vast majority of people who support common-sense laws need to speak up — we can’t let the vocal, well-funded minority dictate our nation’s laws. That’s why I’m happy to participate in the Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America Third Annual Brooklyn Bridge March and Rally to End Gun Violence. We’ll be meeting in Cadman Plaza Park in Brooklyn Heights at 9 a.m. on May 9, and I hope readers will join me.

Moms, dads, gun violence survivors and other passionate advocates from all across this city and country are not waiting on Congress to act — we’re organizing on local bridges, statehouses, corporate boardrooms and in our communities all over America to fight for common sense solutions to our nation’s gun laws.

It’s incredibly inspiring to be among so many people who believe, as I do, that we can do more to end the senseless gun violence that kills 88 Americans, including 8 children or teens, every day. I urge all New Yorkers to join in the march on May 9 (RSVP at act.everytown.org/event/moms-events_attend/1053). Together, we can make our voices heard!
