Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn’s Annual Mismatch Day event on April 17 created a lively atmosphere that helped to boost school spirit while encouraging creativity and acceptance.

Students of every grade level at the historic private school at 8515 Ridge Boulevard in Bay Ridge, from Adelphi’s Little Schoolers to its college-bound Senior Class, were encouraged to come to school dressed in the zaniest mix of clothing they could find.

Different-colored socks, different shoes, shorts worn over pants, multiple neckties and different-colored hair clips were the norm on this day, which was the latest in a series of special themed dress-up days that Adelphi has established and refers to as Spirit Days. As a time-honored tradition, Adelphi holds five popular Spirit Days each year, including Crazy Hat Day, Disney Day, Pajama Day, Brown & Gold Day (named for the school colors) and, of course, Mismatch Day!

The participation of the students and staff was important, according to Head of School Iphigenia Romanos.

“Not only did Mismatch Day provide an enjoyable and lighthearted atmosphere for the students during classes, but it also reinforced an important lesson about acceptance,” Romanos said. “Here at Adelphi, a diverse multicultural and nondenominational institution, we teach the importance of tolerance and acceptance of all cultures, beliefs and values. Mismatch Day is a fun reminder that no matter how we look or dress and despite our differences, we are all part of the same nurturing community.”
