“Crime Jazz” sounds like a music category like “Gangsta Rap” but it’s actually the name of a unique show that will be presented in Bay Ridge this month featuring music associated with crime and criminals.

The show is being presented by Art on the Corner, the arts program at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 7420 Fourth Ave., on Saturday, April 25, at 8 p.m. The concert will take place in the Soul Café, a venue located in the church building.

The concert will include the theme songs of 1950s detective shows written by composers like Johnny Mandel, Henry Mancini and Nelson Riddle, as well as new arrangements of rock songs such as Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal” and Aerosmith’s “Janie’s Got a Gun.”

“Crime Jazz” will mark the return of Jazz Nite at Art on the Corner.

The show features the talents of the Broken Reed Saxophone Quartet, an acclaimed musical group whose members – Dimitri Moderbacher, Jacob Teichroew, Jenny Hill and Charley Gerard – have performed at the Juilliard School, the Blue Note Jazz Club, the Kennedy Center and at jazz festivals around the world. The quartet has also performed, individually and as a group, with music superstars like Aretha Franklin and Norah Jones.

The Broken Reed Saxophone Quartet will be joined at the April 25 concert by drummer Jeff Hirshfield.

Rita Pihra-Majurinen, artistic director for Art on the Corner, said she’s excited about the appearance by the Broken Reed  Saxophone Quartet as well as by the return of Jazz Nite.

“Art on the Corner’s inaugural Jazz Nite this past November was very successful,” she said. “We are so pleased to offer the community a taste of jazz mixed with food and fun, all without having to leave the neighborhood.”

Tickets for “Crime Jazz” are $30 per person (including food and drink) and can be purchased in advance on the Art on the Corner website at  www.artonthecorner.org or at the office at Good Shepherd.

Pihra-Majurinen said people should try to purchase tickets soon, as she expects the show to be sold out.
