The halls of Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn were a sea of brown and gold on a recent Friday, as students and teachers at the Bay Ridge private school came to class dressed in the academy’s official colors in a unified display of school spirit.
Students of every grade level, from Adelphi’s Little Schoolers (a program for 2-year-olds) to the academy’s senior class were encouraged to come to school dressed in official Adelphi gear.
Plenty of bright gold sweatshirts and brown sweatpants were on display, as well as hoodies and sweaters, all worn in the name of school unity.
Brown & Gold Day was the latest in a series of special themed dress-up events that Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn has established. The dress-up events are called Spirit Days and Adelphi holds five of them each year. Other days include Crazy Hat Day, Disney Day, Pajama Day and Mismatch Day.
The enthusiastic participation of the students and the staff was encouraging, according to Head of School Iphigenia Romanos.
“Whenever we plan a schoolwide activity like this, it’s encouraging to see so many students and staff members participate to show their school spirit. We believe that the experiences of our students outside of the classroom are just as important and rewarding as their experiences within the classroom,” Romanos said. “Adelphi’s dedication to the education of the ‘total child’ has been proudly promoted as a staple of the academy’s founding philosophy since 1863. An event like Brown & Gold Day is a strong example of an in-school, out-of-the-classroom ‘total child’ experience that, in turn, enhances the in-classroom experience for the entire school and also promotes pride, tradition, spirit and community.”
Founded in 1863, Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn offers programs for students from 2 years of age through the 12th Grade. The academy places an emphasis on small class size, individualized attention, self-expression, critical thinking and hands-on learning, according to school officials.
Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn receives its charter from the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York and has been a member of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools since 1928.
