Schumer makes recommendation for Brooklyn U.S. Attorney

U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-Brooklyn) has selected a nominee for U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York to replace Loretta Lynch, who left the post following her confirmation as U.S. attorney general.

On Thursday, Schumer announced he has recommended longtime Eastern District prosecutor Robert L. Capers to be the next U.S. attorney for the Eastern District. Capers, a Bronx native and 20-year veteran prosecutor, is currently the senior litigation counsel at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York and formerly served as chief, Narcotics Section/International Narcotic Strike Force.

Schumer said he spoke with Lynch, and she was delighted with his choice.

“Capers is in the mold of Loretta Lynch, really smart, hardworking, nose to the grind stone; not flashy but gets the job done and gets it done superbly,” the senator said in a released statement.

Capers has worked for the U.S. Attorney’s Office since 2003 in a variety of roles. Prior to his current position, Capers worked as deputy chief of the Narcotic and Dangerous Drug Section; chief of the Narcotics Section/International Narcotics Strike Force; acting deputy chief of the General Crimes Section; and assistant U.S. attorney.

In addition, Capers — whose father and brother are NYPD cops — has worked for the Office of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor for New York City, and was an assistant district attorney at the New York County District Attorney’s Office.

“Robert Capers has a first-rate legal mind, extensive experience, intellect, dedication and a wide range of experiences that make him an unparalleled choice in the Eastern District,” said Schumer.
