State lawmakers, including members of the State Legislature’s Brooklyn delegation, welcomed a Chinese diplomat during her first visit to Albany on May 13, showing the foreign dignitary around the capitol and discussing trade and other issues.

Assembly members Peter Abbate, Nicole Malliotakis and Helene Weinstein from Brooklyn, as well as Queens lawmakers Assemblymember David Weprin and state Sen. Toby Stavisky and Bronx Assemblymember Jose Rivera were among the elected officials meeting with Ambassador Zhang Qiyue, the new consul general of the People’s Republic of China.

The foreign dignitary also received acknowledgement from state Sen. Marty Golden during remarks he made on the senate floor.

The consul general’s visit was important, according to Assemblymember Nicole Malliotakis (R-C-Bay Ridge-Southwest Brooklyn), who said lawmakers are always seeking ways to grow New York State’s economy.

“The relationship between the U.S. and China is one of the most important bilateral relationships in the world. As China’s economy and middle class continue to expand, there is a tremendous opportunity for New York’s products to emerge in this fast growing market,” Malliotakis said.
