“Acting on the advice of the I.W.W. leaders yesterday at the mass meeting in Haledon, the local silk strikers got on the picket line in large numbers this morning, and at several of the mills there were encounters with the police,” the Eagle reported.

MALCOLM X was born on this day in 1925. Malcolm X was a black nationalist and civil rights activist whose life was transformed after serving a prison term. On his release, he became committed to the Nation of Islam, later making a pilgrimage to Mecca and becoming an orthodox Muslim. He was killed in 1965.
“BAD KID,” a memoir by David Crabb, will be featured at powerHouse arena tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. in DUMBO. Crabb’s memoir is an adaption from his award-winning solo show that focuses on the “awkward moment in life when you are suddenly shoved from a safe and happy childhood into the terrifying realm of the teenager.”

New York City’s most populous borough, Brooklyn, is home to nearly 2.6 million residents. If Brooklyn were an independent city it would be the fourth largest city in the United States. While Brooklyn has become the epitome of ‘cool and hip’ in recent years, for those that were born here, raised families here and improved communities over the years, Brooklyn has never been ‘uncool’.
