Fifth Avenue Committee to sponsor ‘Innovations in Creating Thriving and Equitable Communities’

The Fifth Avenue Committee, Inc. (FAC) — a 37-year-old Brooklyn-based nonprofit community development corporation — is convening a group of top business and nonprofit innovators, leaders in city government and elected officials for an afternoon of panel discussions followed by an evening benefit and awards reception.

The conference, titled “Innovations in Creating Thriving and Equitable Communities,” will take place on Tuesday, May 19, at the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s BAM Rose Cinema, 20 Lafayette Ave. The panel discussions will take place between 2:30 and 5:30 p.m., followed by the reception from 6 to 9 p.m.

 

The discussions include:

Unlocking the Potential: Creating Industrial Jobs and Affordable Housing, Ensuring Mixed-Use and Mixed-Income Neighborhoods in NYC — Panelists include Andrew Kimball, CEO, Industry City; Councilmember Brad Lander (D-39th District); Michelle de la Uz, executive director, Fifth Avenue Committee; Carl Weisbrod, director, NYC Department of City Planning; and Barika Wiliams of the Association for Neighborhood and Housing Development.

Holy Grail or Pipe Dream: Paying for Performance to Achieve Social Impact and Equity — Panelists include Lilli-An Elkins of Columbia University, Kristin Giantris of the Nonprofit Finance Fund, David Greenberg of MDRC, Matthew Klein of the Center for Economic Opportunity and Andrea Phillips of Goldman Sachs’ Urban Investment Group.

At the reception, FAC will present awards to the NYC Change Capital Fund for its commitment to funding neighborhood-based poverty-fighting programs throughout New York City and to Congresswoman Nydia M. Velázquez for her effective advocacy to preserve affordable housing in Red Hook, Sunset Park and nearby areas.
