Slain Brooklyn officers to be honored at NY memorial

ALBANY— Eight officers who died last year from line-of-duty injuries have been honored at the New York Police Memorial, along with 14 who died from illnesses related to recovery work at the World Trade Center destroyed by terrorists in 2001.

They include Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos, gunned down in their patrol car on a Brooklyn street in December.

Others are Rochester Officer Daryl Pierson, shot by a suspect; Trooper Christopher Skinner, killed by a hit-and-run driver; and Johnson City Officer David Smith, shot responding to a disturbance.

Also honored are NYPD’s Dennis Guerra, who suffered smoke inhalation; NYPD Officer Michael Williams, injured in a crash; and Douglas Mayville of the Albany Police, who authorities say died from inhaling toxic chemicals in forensic investigations.

In December 2014, NYPD Officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos were shot and killed as they sat in their patrol cars in Brooklyn. The officers, shot at point-blank range, were on special duty near Myrtle and Tompkins avenues in Bedford-Stuyvesant when they were ambushed by gunman Ismaaiyl Brinsley. Brinsley, who was born in Brooklyn, killed himself shortly after shooting Officers Liu and Ramos.
