‘Wild Things’ invade Maurice Sendak School
Beloved Author’s Birthday Celebrated with Dedication of ‘Wild Things’ Mural
The life and legacy of Brooklyn native Maurice Sendak was celebrated on June 10, the late author’s birthday. Brian Selznick — the world-renowned illustrator and creator of “The Invention of Hugo Cabret” — read Sendak’s masterwork “Where the Wild Things Are” to Maurice Sendak Community School students in Park Slope.
Before the reading, a group of students unveiled a whimsical mural from the book, as captured by Michael Hagen, a longtime Sendak friend and collaborator. The mural was funded by the Maurice Sendak Foundation, which is committed to sharing his work and supporting educational programs involving the arts. The familiar and well-loved characters now “reside” in the school’s main hallway, exhorting students to be joyful, creative and inclusive.
