ON THIS DAY IN 1913, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “‘I’ll Be Candidate, But Fear Nobody Wants Me’ – Gaynor.”

The article focused on mayoral election speculation. The then-mayor said he “deserves fusion indorsement,” but recognized that he didn’t have the support.

“Mayor Gaynor in an interview today indicated that he would take a renomination if it were offered to him, but made it clear that as of now no political party had made overtures to him with such a thing in view,” the Eagle reported.
