Hospital administrators, local officials, community leaders, staff, teachers and students from P.S. 93 lent a helping hand as David Miller, DDS, chairman of the Department of Dental Medicine, and Steven Korf, president and CEO of Interfaith Medical Center, cut the ribbon for the hospital’s brand new Dental Center (in the hospital’s East Building at 1545 Atlantic Ave.), which opens to the public on July 1.

“We are extremely proud of our ultra-modern Dental Center, which is the culmination of a year-long expansion of our Dental Medicine program under Dr. Miller’s leadership,” said Korf. “The new Dental Center permits us to offer comprehensive dental services and oral surgery under one roof and serves as a cornerstone in Interfaith’ s efforts to keep our community healthy.”

The Dental Center features seven dental suites, an in-house dental anesthesia operating room (OR) suite and monitors that display educational materials and photos from intraoral cameras.

When it opens it will offer comprehensive services for children and adults, including patients with medical, physical or intellectual abilities. Patients will have access to a full spectrum of dental services including preventive and restorative dentistry, fixed/removable prosthodontics, pediatric dentistry, orthodontics, periodontics, endodontics, oral surgery and implants. The center will be staffed by general dentists and board certified specialists, including pediatric dentists.

The department will continue to offer services from its clinic at 1536 Bedford Ave. in Crown Heights as well.

“We wanted to create a warm, inviting, open and airy space that would feel like a ‘private practice’ for our patients,” said Miller, who is president of the New York State Dental Association. “In the past, patients who required sedation had to have dental surgery in the hospital’s OR. Now we are able to offer our patients a full spectrum of services in the Dental Center.”

The Dental Center is the latest component in the expansion of Interfaith’s Dental Medicine Program. Over the past year, the department has decreased waiting times, increased patient satisfaction scores and doubled the size of its training program to 16 residents from top dental programs around the country including NYU, the University of Pennsylvania, Temple University, Howard University and Stonybrook University.

In the coming months, the department plans to extend its evening and weekend hours with a long-term goal to keep the Dental Center open seven days a week.

This year the hospital’s “I See You Smile Program” provided dental and vision screening to more than 300 elementary and middle school students in Central Brooklyn.
