Bravo! for Mark Morris Dance Center, which plans to build two new studios at a development next door to its home base at 3 Lafayette Ave.

The Brooklyn Cultural District institution is expanding at 280 Ashland Place, a mixed-use project Jonathan Rose Cos. has just started building. See related story for more details about the Brooklyn Cultural District: Apartments (BCD:A), which is the new name of this residential and retail development.

The developer will do the core-and-shell construction of the 3,757-square-foot studio space at cost before selling it to the dance center, Jonathan Rose, president of Jonathan Rose Cos., said in a recent interview with Eye on Real Estate.

The two new studios “will house activities and events for the School at the Mark Morris Dance Center and for our community outreach activities, such as Dance for Parkinson’s Disease and other programs,” dance center spokesman William Murray told us via email.

“This new space will not house Mark Morris Dance Group activities, though we may use it occasionally. So it’s an investment in our great community costing $1.3 million.”

That is the price the dance center will pay to purchase the studio space, Murray said.

That sum does not include the cost of finishing out the studios. At this time, there’s no estimate on what that interior-construction cost will be, Murray added.
