Historian Dr. Nina Ansary, born in Tehran, is an expert in the women’s movement in Iran. The author of “Jewels of Allah: The Untold Story of Women in Iran,” Ansary will appear at the powerHouse Arena in DUMBO on July 23 to speak about her book, which challenges Western assumptions about women in Iran and highlights the accomplishments of powerful female voices in Iran’s past and present.

Ansary’s book, inspired by her doctoral research at Columbia University, illuminates a growing feminist movement emerging within Iran’s patriarchal society.

Ansary will appear in conversation with Cyrus M. Copeland, who was born in Washington, D.C. to an American father and Iranian mother. Copeland moved to Iran with his family at age 10 and has written several books, including the memoir “Off the Radar,” which details his quest to uncover the truth behind his father Max Copeland’s imprisonment as an alleged CIA agent at the beginning of the Islamic Revolution — a quest that has shaped his own perceptions of Iran.

Ansary and Copeland will provide a humanist perspective on Iran through personal experience and scholarly expertise, along with a video presentation. A Q&A session and book signing will follow the presentation. Yasamin Beitollahi, contributor to The Huffington Post, will moderate the event.
