With help from an $18,000 donation from Northfield Bank Foundation, NYU Lutheran Medical Center has opened a new infusion center in Bay Ridge to treat patients with cancer, anemia, rheumatoid arthritis and neurological disorders.

NYU Lutheran officials and representatives of Northfield Bank Foundation recently took part in a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the opening of the center at 8721 Fifth Ave. NYU Lutheran Medical Center is located at 150 55th St. in Sunset Park.

Patients undergoing infusion therapy are given medication through a needle or catheter. Infusion therapy is prescribed for patients who cannot take medications orally.

The new NYU Lutheran Infusion Center took three years to develop, according to NYU Lutheran officials. The facility features private rooms for patients, a state-of-the-art pharmacy and extended hours of operation. The center is expected to begin accepting patients by the end of this month.

“This is a big deal to us,” said Claudia Caine, president of NYU Lutheran Medical Center. “We’re tremendously appreciative of the donation by Northfield and excited about what our NYU Lutheran infusion team can now offer its patients.”

Diane Senerchia, executive director of Northfield Bank Foundation, said she was impressed with the look of the facility.

“It is so important to make patients feel as comfortable as possible, and this new center will certainly do that,” she said.

Dr. Rami K. Daya, chief of hematology and medical oncology, predicted that the infusion center will be more efficient and will allow for faster treatment of patients.

“We hope that this new facility will provide the residents of Bay Ridge and the surrounding area an alternative location to similar centers in Manhattan,” Daya said. “Patients can now receive the same high-quality of care and high-level experience right here in their community.”

Patients will have the comfort of private treatment rooms with individual viewing monitors and brand-new chairs designed for maximum comfort, officials said. Family members will also be able to visit privately.

The facility’s new extended hours of operation will be from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
