A 5-mile race held in memory of a Bay Ridge police officer slain in the line of duty has become one of the most popular traditions in the neighborhood.

The 27th Annual Hoban Run, named in honor of police officer Christopher Hoban, will take place on Sunday, Sept. 20.

Registration for runners is now open, officials at Xaverian High School announced. Hoban was a 1980 graduate of Xaverian High School. He was shot to death by suspected drug dealers during an undercover buy and bust operation in upper Manhattan in 1988. Hoban was 26 years old when he died.

In 1989, the Police Alumni of Xaverian High School established a memorial scholarship fund to honor their fellow officer.

The Hoban Run, which starts and finishes outside of Xaverian High School at 7100 Shore Road, is supported by the Xaverian Police Alumni, the New York Police Department and Bay Ridge community leaders.

The Hoban Run keeps alive the memory of Hoban’s personal sacrifice and serves as the primary funding of the Hoban Scholarship, according to Xaverian officials.

The scholarship fund provides tuition assistance to sons of police officers attending Xaverian High School.

Runners aren’t the only people who can enjoy the Hoban Run. The all-day event is usually a family affair with games for children, a barbeque and a concert after the completion of the race.

Runners can register for the Hoban Run online at www.xaverian.org/hobanrun
