Who benefits the most from volunteering? The volunteers themselves. That’s the theme that runs through all the stories in the latest inspiring collection from “Chicken Soup for the Soul” — a book filled with stories about volunteering.

“Chicken Soup for the Soul: Volunteering & Giving Back” (Chicken Soup for the Soul Publishing, LLC; Amy Newmark; Foreword by Carrie Morgridge) is filled with stories about passion and purpose — from people who are passionate about their volunteer work and their charitable giving, passionate about the new purpose they have found in their lives, and passionate about what volunteering has done for them.

Alicia Rosen, a Brooklyn resident who has an MFA in Fiction from The New School, has contributed an essay to the latest volume. Her stories have appeared in numerous journals and magazines published in North America. She is a voracious reader, and a sketcher of family focused cartoons.

In the book’s foreword, bestselling author and philanthropist Carrie Morgridge touches on the importance of every little action we do for others. She and her husband John run The Morgridge Family Foundation, which makes transformative investments through education, conservation, the arts and health and wellness. All of her royalties from the sales of this book are going to the Every Gift Matters Fund at Mile High United Way.

The stories in the book are indeed about transformation: a shy, introverted teen girl who becomes a leader at the local food distribution center; a mom who helps a class of first-generation Americans get into college; an 80-year-old woman who continues to lead sing-alongs at her sister’s rest home even after her sister’s passing; a hospice volunteer who sits with patients so they won’t be alone in their final hours. You’ll be inspired and entertained by this diverse group of stories by people from all walks of life, ordinary people recounting extraordinary experiences that have enriched their lives.
