Greetings, Brooklyn. Today is the 240th day of the year.

ON THIS DAY IN 1949, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Boro Reports 26 of City’s 53 New Cases of Polio.”

The article focused on Brooklyn’s efforts to reduce the number of polio cases found in the borough by inspecting all of the movie theaters.

“[Councilmember] Mirabile pointed out that the greatest number of persons afflicted with the disease have been children under the age of 14, and that children congregate daily in motion picture houses,” the Eagle reported.
