Brooklyn’s County Clerk, Clerk of the Supreme Court and Commissioner of Jurors Hon. Nancy T. Sunshine was recognized by the New York State Association of County Clerks as the Clerk of the Year and was awarded with a plaque during a brief ceremony in the Supreme Court building on Tuesday.

“The only reason why I was able to get this award is because I couldn’t have devoted the time I did with the association unless I could rely on [James Blain, administrator, Kings County Clerk’s Office], [Frank Sheridan, chief of operations] and [Hon. Louis D. Fiorillo, deputy county clerk] to take care of issues in my absence.

“I am very grateful to have all of you, because we are very lucky when we can come to work and be happy,” she continued. “This is a very happy place. We work well together and understand each other.”

Sunshine was thrilled to receive the award, especially because it was voted upon by her fellow county clerks.

“It’s very meaningful when you get an award from your colleagues, because frankly, they know what it’s all about,” Sunshine said. “We’re county clerks and we know that to the outside world it looks like what we do is easy and seamless. It only appears that way because we work so hard.”

Sunshine also pointed to recently passed e-file legislation that the Association of County Clerks promoted as reason to be especially proud to receive the award this year.

“This year, as an association, we are very thrilled because we got e-file legislation passed,” she said. “It was with our support, it was with hard work, it was a pilot for over 10 years. What really got it passed this year was that our association said that we need this, this is good, and the legislature respected our position.”

Sunshine has worked as the Kings County clerk since 2006. Her office, one of the busiest in the state, processes more than one million Brooklyn Supreme Court records and judgements per year. As one of the busiest jury units in the state, Sunshine annually works with more than 100,000 jurors per year.
