Greetings, Brooklyn. Today is the 244th day of the year.

ON THIS DAY in 1919, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Lonas May Renew Offer to Build 14 Jamaica Bay Piers.”

The article focused on a generous proposal to help build new piers for the city’s waterfront.

“It was learned today that F. E. Lonas may renew his offer to build fourteen piers in Jamaica Bay without a penny of cost to the city,” the Eagle reported. His first offer was ignored…despite the fact that the commission had before it petitions from practically all the large civic and commercial organizations of the city, including the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, asking for the construction of new piers.”

Two-and-a-half hours after it entered Soviet airspace, a Soviet interceptor plane destroyed the plane, killing all 269 persons on board.
