The Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association (BWBA) hosted its annual judiciary night on Thursday at Borough Hall, where it offered its members the chance to meet Kings County’s newest judges.

“I welcome everyone here tonight [as we] are here to celebrate our judiciary,” said BWBA President Helene Blank. “This is about honoring the judiciary and especially the newly elected, re-elected, appointed and re-appointed, of which we have in many courts.

“It’s a great chance for members of the bar to meet the new judges, and there are so many new faces here,” Blank continued. “That’s what it’s all about.”

After all of the new and old judges were introduced, Justice Sylvia Hinds-Radix, a past president of the organization, took a moment to thank Blank and to commend her on the work she has done as president so far.

“Our current president, a wonderful person, a hard-working woman, a woman who cracks the whip — Helene Blank,” said Hinds-Radix. “She’s not a judge, but I call her the honorable Helene Blank because she really is honorable. We’re glad to see that she has had a tremendous year. She’s reaching the end of her term, but has the opportunity to come here tonight to say hello to all of you.”

Blank wasn’t so quick to take all of the credit; she thanked Lucy DiSalvo and Betty Matondo for their help.

“Much like Cher and Madonna, if you know Brooklyn, you know these two women by their first names — Betty and Lucy,” Blank said. “They know everyone and we are only as good as they make us.”

The BWBA next meets on Jan. 25 at the Governor’s Room at the Heights Casino, where it will host a Continuing Legal Education seminar with Jon Krop. See www.BrooklynWomensBar.org for more details.
