While most people were popping champagne corks, blowing horns and tossing confetti to celebrate the New Year, Stephanie Diaz ushered in 2016 by giving birth at Coney Island Hospital.

Diaz, who gave birth to her baby son Zayden Noel at exactly midnight on Jan. 1, also secured a place for herself and her little boy in the city’s record books.

That’s because Little Zayden enjoyed the distinction of being the first baby of 2016 for the New York City Health + Hospitals Corp., the entity that operates the city’s 11 public hospitals.

Zayden, weighing in at 7 pounds, 1 ounce, is Diaz’s second child to be born in Coney Island Hospital.

“Coney Island Hospital is thrilled to have the first NYC Health + Hospitals baby born in 2016,” said Coney Island Hospital Executive Director Robert Hughes. “We are elated to be part of such a special moment for this family.” Coney Island Hospital also had the first baby born in the city’s public health system last year, when Sheepshead Bay residents Olena and Vasyl Olenyukh welcomed their son Maxim. New Year’s Day 2016 was also a busy one at New York Methodist Hospital in Park Slope, where Tricia Navarro-Caraballo and Chris Caraballo welcomed baby boy Giovanni Navarro-Caraballo at 12:09 a.m.

Baby Giovanni weighed 9 pounds, 2 ounces at birth.

The proud parents live in East New York.

Meanwhile, over at NYU Lutheran Medical Center in Sunset Park, the first newborn of 2016 was a baby girl.

Layan “Lily” Khalid Kotb was born at 2:12 a.m. to the delight of her mom and dad, Taghrid Mohamed and Khalid Mohamed Kotb.

Little Layan, who weighed 7 pounds, 15 ounces, joins a family of girls. Her big sisters are Hala, 15, and Haneen, 12.

The family lives in Cairo, Egypt and visits New York City regularly, according to a press release from NYU Lutheran Medical Center.
