Greetings, Brooklyn. Today is the sixth day of the year.

ON THIS DAY IN 1912, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Death and Suffering Follow in the Wake of Intense Cold Wave.”

The article focused on 11 deaths in Brooklyn during a stretch of days where extremely low temperatures were recorded.

“There has been intense suffering throughout the city, and lodging houses, hospitals, police stations and even the morgue have been places of refuge for sufferers from exposure,” the Eagle reported.

JOAN OF ARC was born on this day in 1412. The teenage Jeanne d’Arc heard the voice of God commanding her to take up arms against the English during the Hundred Years War. She led a French army — dressed in men’s armor — to try to oust the English from France. After some initial victories, she was captured in 1431 and turned over to a French ecclesiastical court by the British. The court found her guilty of heresy. Joan was burned at the stake in May of 1431 in France, at age 19.
