Series on Israel conversations begins this Sunday

“How Do We Talk About Israel?”

A series of talks this fall designed to nurture civil discourse will engage the community on the complexities of this question surrounding Israeli politics and diplomacy.

The Flatbush Jewish Center on East 5th Street opens the series this weekend, Sunday, October 30 at 4 p.m., as part of the Institute for Living Judaism in Brooklyn’s 2016-17 Speaker Series.

Noam Gilboord, Director of Israel and International Affairs for the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York will give a talk aimed at providing authoritative information as well as increasing our sensitivity to all sides of the issues. He aims to foster civil conversation both within the Jewish community and with others. Suggested donation, $10. The full speaker series includes lectures and panels devoted to promoting informed, civil discourse within and among communities on the policies and politics of Israel and US/Israel relations. The next event, on Sunday, November 13 at Kane Street Synagogue, is titled “How Do We Talk About Israel?: The Rabbi’s Perspective.” This panel discussion with leading members of the rabbinate will address how spiritual leaders navigate such divisive waters. Confirmed speakers, as of press time, include Brooklyn Rabbis Matt Carl (East Midwood Jewish Center), Maurice Appelbaum (Congregation Ahavas Israel) and Linda Henry-Goodman (Union Temple). Additional panelists are Rabbi Gordon Tucker (Temple Israel Center, White Plains), Rabbi Avi Killip (Mechon Hadar, Manhattan). The panel discussion begins at 4 p.m. Kane Street Synagogue is at 236 Kane St. in Cobble Hill.

A third program, focused on “Israel and Geopolitics,” takes place at Congregation Mount Sinai, Saturday, December 10, 7:30 p.m.

Hadassah’s Brooklyn Region co-sponsors this panel, which will give an in-depth analysis of Israel’s current situation. Scheduled speakers include Dr. Udi Sommer, Israeli Institute Visiting Professor of Political Science at Columbia University and Michael Goldhaber, International Legal Expert and author of The Attention Economy.

Future 2017 programs in the series include lecture by Rabbi Michael Paley from UJA, a workshop by the group Resetting the Table, and another on “Israel on Campus.”
