Adelphi Academy celebrates Hero Day

There’s a hero inside every Adelphian. That was the message delivered by students and teachers at Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn during the school’s recent celebration of Hero Day.

Students at the private school in Bay Ridge were encouraged by their teachers to come to school dressed as their favorite superheroes on Sept. 26.

Students, faculty and staff came to Adelphi Academy dressed as their favorite superheroes, both fictional and real. Hero Day is the first of the school’s monthly Spirit Day events.

The Spirit Day events, which are held throughout the school year, are designed to foster school pride and self-esteem in students.

For Hero Day, staff members Angelo Rago, Nikki Fregara, Elizabeth Giacchino and Christine Colacrai teamed up to showcase their creativity by portraying the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Teacher Alana Dauter spent the day in a Supergirl costume, complete with a cape. Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and Captain America were also among the most popular characters portrayed by students and teachers.

There were also costumes paying tribute to real heroes like police officers, firefighters and members of the military.

The day was inspired by Adelphi’s motto for the 2016-2017 academic year: There’s a Hero in Me.

Hero Day served as a reminder to students to always act in a manner that is respectful and helpful to others, according to Head of School Iphigenia Romanos, who came to school wearing a cape and a shirt that read, “Embrace Your Inner Hero.”

“Hero Day was one of our most successful Spirit Day events ever,” Romanos said in a statement. “To start the year on such a positive note and echo such an important, valuable life lesson like tapping into one’s own heroic qualities, from being polite and respectful to assisting others in need at all times, is a great symbol of the sense of community and cooperation that helps make an Adelphi education truly an education of the total child in every way.”

Students of all ages, but especially those in Adelphi’s Lower School, enjoyed taking turns posing in front of the school’s panther statue. The statue was decked out in a superhero mask and comic-inspired signage. Each child then received some hero-themed goodies and accessories while listening to hero-inspired music.

Located at 8515 Ridge Blvd. in Bay Ridge, Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn educates students from pre-K to the 12th grade.
