Greetings, Brooklyn. Today is the 306th day of the year.

ON THIS DAY IN 1953, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Dared in Bar to Do a Brodie, He Hops Off Brooklyn Bridge.”

The article focused on a man who was dared to jump off the Brooklyn Bridge, did it and survived.

“Far from being injured by his 125-foot dive, Smith was the life of Ward 41 yesterday,” the Eagle reported. “… Smith hit the water with a smack that was heard a block away, but apparently no one saw him jump … Smith hasn’t announced his plans for the future and they depend, somewhat, on the police, who haven’t yet announced their plans for his future.”

THE PRIME MERIDIAN was set on this day in 1884. Delegates from 25 nations met in October in Washington, D.C. at the International Meridian Conference to set up time zones for the world. On this day, the treaty adopted by the conference took effect, making Greenwich, England the Prime Meridian and setting the International Date Line at 180-degrees longitude in the Pacific. Every 15 degrees of longitude equals one hour, and there are 24 meridians. While some countries do not strictly observe this system (for example, China stretches over five time zones but it is the same time everywhere in China), it has brought predictability and logic to time throughout the world.
