ON THIS DAY IN 1934, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Father Pavone Leads Orchestra in ‘Faust.’”

The article focused on a local priest who led a performance of “Faust” at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

“Father Pavone, who became a priest 20 years ago, combined his religious duties with his musical talents early in his priesthood, writing cantatas, music for masses and conducting concerts and operas both here and abroad,” the Eagle reported.

HENRY M. STANLEY FOUND DAVID LIVINGSTONE on this day in 1871. After almost a year of searching, Stanley found explorer and missionary David Livingstone in Ujiji, Africa and uttered the immortal words, “Dr. Livingston, I presume?”

MARTIN LUTHER was born on this day in 1483. He became the founder and leader of the Protestant Reformation when he tacked his 95 Theses on the door of All Saints’ Church in Wittenberg on the eve of All Saints’ Day. Luther asserted that the Bible was the sole authority of the church, called for reformation of abuses by the Roman Catholic Church and denied supremacy of the pope. He was tried for heresy by the Catholic Church and was excommunicated.

THE MARINE CORPS was established on this day in 1775. Originally part of the Navy, it became a separate unit in 1789.
